How to Choose the Right Ski-Doo or Lynx

The right sled comes down to where you actually ride, more than any spec sheet. If you spend your winter on groomed trail networks  Ontario, Quebec, the Maritimes, most of the trail systems east of the Rockies  a 137 to 146 inch track paired with a comfortable seat and a tall windshield will serve you far better than raw horsepower. This is where the Ski-Doo Expedition and Grand Touring families, and the Lynx touring lineup, are built to live.

If your riding is deep powder in BC, Alberta, or northern Quebec, the calculus flips. You want a 154 to 165 inch track and the lightest chassis you can manage. A longer track floats on top of snow instead of trenching through it, and a narrower, lighter stance makes sidehilling  leaning the machine onto one ski to cut across a slope  far less exhausting. The Ski-Doo Back Country and Summit lines exist for exactly this kind of riding.

Ski-Doo vs. Lynx: what’s actually different

Both brands share BRP engineering underneath, but they’re tuned for different jobs. Ski-Doo is built around North American riding conditions: wide groomed trail networks, touring comfort, and deep-snow mountain machines refined over decades of trail-system riding. Lynx comes out of the Nordic riding tradition  hard-packed snow, rough and unmarked terrain, and long-distance utility work  with a suspension setup that’s built to absorb punishment rather than smooth it out. If you ride marked Canadian trails or mountain bowls, Ski-Doo is the more natural fit. If your riding is rough, remote, or off the marked network entirely, it’s worth taking a serious look at Lynx.

Engine size, in plain terms

A 600cc-class engine covers the majority of trail riding comfortably, and it’s easier on both fuel and your wallet than anything bigger. Step up to an 850 E-TEC or a turbocharged option only if you’re regularly in heavy snow, riding two-up, or towing gear. New riders in particular are almost always better served starting smaller  confidence on a snowmobile builds a lot faster on a machine you can fully control than on one that’s fighting you.
